This webcast will be 2-fold. The webcast’s first part will focus on finding college options for students with intellectual disabilities. It will include a review of resources to help students and families to find the right fit, prepare for college, and pay for college. The webcast’s second part will focus on the Tennessee Alliance for Inclusive Higher Education and Tennessee resources to help students and families pay for college, and review college options currently available in the state.
Presenters:
Shelby Bates is a technical assistance specialist for Think College, focusing on supporting students and families in the transition to and through college and the development of state and regional alliances for inclusive higher education efforts. Prior to this position, she worked for Colorado’s Inclusive Higher Education Consortium, coordinating activities to increase awareness of college options for students with intellectual disabilities in the state. She is fueled by her experience growing up with a sibling with a disability.
Elise McMillian, an attorney, is the Director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, a Senior Associate with the VUMC Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and a faculty advisor for Next Steps at Vanderbilt. She was one of the founders of Next Steps at Vanderbilt and the Tennessee Alliance for Inclusive Higher Education. She is the parent of an adult with disabilities.
