Effective Visits with Legislators: Resources You Can Use

This collection of resources can assist individuals prepare for an effective meeting or other communication with local, state or federal legislators to help inform and educate about postsecondary education for students with intellectual disabilities. 

Included are: 

  • A template to help you create an effective "leave behind" for your state: a document no more than front and back of one page that shares important facts about postsecondary education for students with intellectual disability, with suggestions for how the legislator can help support these efforts. You can use this example to create one for your own program, state allliance, or regional alliance.
  • An example of a "leave behind" from Syracuse University.
  • A document sharing information to help you learn more about your members of Congress within the Federal (national) Government that shares who they are, how to find them, and how to contact them.
  • Getting to Know My Legislators: A fill in the blank form where you can list information about the members of Congress from your state.
  • Meeting with Members of Congress vs. Meeting with Staffers - This document shares information to help you understand the role of congressional staffers, and how meeting with them can be just as effective as meeting with a Senator or Representative
