House Bill 1844: A Bill Requiring the Office of Higher Education to Inform Students of Postsecondary Education Options for those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Introduced in February 2019, this bill instructs the Minnesota Office of Higher Education to provide students and families with information about planning and preparing for postsecondary education, beginning in 7th grade. This will include suggestions for studying effectively in high school, a list of courses that are necessary to be prepared for postsecondary education, and details about available support in educational planning. Additionally, the Office of Higher Education must include information about the costs of postsecondary education, how credits are transferred across higher education institutions, and advice on how to evaluate and select schools to attend. Information shared by the office, which will be published on its website, must also include explanations of every Minnesota college and university's policies regarding dual credit acceptance and concurrent enrollment. This bill also seeks funding for grants to Minnesota Independence College and Community that will promote tuition reduction and institutional support. If passed, it would secure $2,375,000 for FY 2020 and the same amount again in FY 2021.
