group of excited students and text reads a career in transition?

Did you know that UMass Boston offers a Transition Leadership Certificate to support young people with diverse disabilities transitioning from high school to adult life?

The Transition Leadership Program (TLP) prepares educators, counselors, and other professionals to help students with disabilities develop skills for employment, college readiness, and independent living. The program emphasizes evidence-based practices such as youth leadership, self-determination, family involvement, and interagency collaboration.

What do Transition Specialists learn in the TLP?

Graduates provide tailored guidance to students and learn to:

  • Lead student-centered Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams
  • Focus on measurable postsecondary goals and ensure compliance
  • Conduct transition assessments aligned with students’ goals
  • Provide professional development on transition topics
  • Strengthen school-family partnerships and community connections

What makes ICI’s Transition Leadership Program unique?

UMass Boston’s TLP is among the first accredited by the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT). This 18-month online program includes five evidence-based courses and a practicum experience, preparing participants for national certification as transition specialists and a state-specific endorsement.
