Webinar: Empowering Students to Make Choices and Get Involved on Campus

This webinar has ended. Visit the webinar resource page for the recording and resources.

Join us for an insightful webinar about "dignity of risk” and how this approach can help empower college students with intellectual disability. As educators, family members, and advocates, we need to support student’s ability to make their own choices and encourage independence. By allowing students to take manageable risks, we help them grow and fully experience college. We’ll also explore the community life engagement approach, which helps ensure students with disability are included in all parts of campus life. This approach offers practical tips for educators and families on how to help students get more involved in campus activities.

During this session, we will explore practical strategies to:

  • Promote Self-Determination: Learn how to support students in solving problems and making decisions in daily campus life.
  • Encourage Independence: Discover how to help students develop skills for living on their own, participating in classes, and getting involved in social activities.
  • Support Active Campus Involvement: Find out how to motivate students to join clubs, organizations, and events.

Real-Life Examples:

  • Hear stories of students who took reasonable risks and became more independent as active members of their campus.
  • Learn about strategies used by staff to encourage students’ independence, such as attending classes on their own, using public transportation, and managing their time between classes.
