Completion of career and technical education (CTE) courses and work-based learning (WBL) programs have been shown to close the career readiness gap. In this resource, the authors provide information from seven years of operating SOS, a high-quality WBL program. SOS is built on the collaboration of special education, CTE, vocational rehabilitation (VR) and the business community.

The article discusses a demonstration program, Transition and Postsecondary Education Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability (TPSIDs) and the accompanying National Coordinating Center created by U.S. Congress in 2008. Topics discussed include the awarding of these programs to institutes of higher education seeking to validate an emerging pathway to increased integrated competitive employment and learning and the need to discern long term fiscal impacts on higher education institutions.

Increasing numbers of students with disabilities are pursuing post-secondary education. Many campuses are not yet equipped to meet the unique and diverse needs of students with disabilities. This article examines programs, services and programs aimed at promoting student choice, independence, social participation, and supports needed for academic success. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has developed and implemented a comprehensive disability services program using a decentralized disability services model.

This book chapter presents an overview of dual enrollment, an inclusive postsecondary education option for students with intellectual disabilities. The chapter begins with a definition of intellectual disability and a discussion of post school outcomes for students with disabilities. The chapter summarizes the results of a national survey of post-secondary educational options for youth with intellectual disabilities, and briefly describes the characteristics of three program models: substantially separate, mixed, and inclusive individual support.
