Without a clear connection between postsecondary education experiences and adult employment and life goals, youth with ID are vulnerable to unemployment and underemployment. This chapter in Think College!: Postsecondary Options for Students with Intellectual Disabilities outlines and discusses the rationale and strategies for developing meaningful, targeted work and community participation experiences. 

This checklist and worksheet assists job developers to think through the variety of ways to collect information about a job seeker. It describes seven strategies for information gathering, and then asks the job developer to reflect on which strategies they used and how they used them. 

The amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) in 2004 reiterate the significance of producing real postsecondary education, employment, and independent living outcomes. However, current employment data continue to show widespread unemployment and very limited access to inclusive community environments and services for adults with severe intellectual disabilities. The transition challenges discussed are to ensure that (1) students have access to the full range of curriculum options and learning experiences; (2) high school graduation decisions are based on meaningful indicators of learning; (3) students have access to postsecondary education, employment, and independent living options; (4) student and family participation are supported; and (5) interagency collaboration is improved.

This 40 page booklet is a collection of writings from the perspectives of employers who describe how they became involved in providing work experiences for youth with disabilities, what made it work, and what they recommend to individuals and organizations representing youth who are job searching. Some of the businesses represented include the Kennedy Space Center, Port Discovery Children's Museum, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Microsoft, the American Institute on Cancer Research, and more.
