Dee Sapp and Kathy Becht, two moms of sons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, share what prepared their sons for the independence of college life. Lawrence (21 years old) began his college program at the University of Cincinnati in 2020, and Pete (30 years old) graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2019. Through personal stories, they also share a few surprises and hiccups along the way. Pete shares his perspective of his 3-year college career.

Accreditation Report Submitted to US Department of Education

The Think College National Coordinating Center has completed the Report on Model Accreditation Standards for Higher Education Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability: Progress on the Path to Education, Employment, and Community Living, and submitted it to the US Department of Education and relevant Congressional committees.

This document includes the original, 2021 version of program accreditation standards, guidance on how to address those standards in your inclusive college program, and the documentation that will be required to indicate that the standard is met. For the current version, see the 2024 Program Accreditation Guidance Manual.

This Executive Summary provides a brief overview of the entire Report on Model Accreditation Standards for Higher Education Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability: Progress on the Path to Education, Employment, and Community Living by the 2016-2020 NCC Accreditation Workgroup. It includes the model accreditation standards and recommendations to Congress and the Department of Education.

The 2016-2020 National Coordinating Center Accreditation Workgroup submitted this statutorily mandated report to the US Department of Education Secretary and relevant Congressional committees in May 2021, summarizing the work of this Accreditation Workgroup and outlining revisions to the Model Program Accreditation Standards that were developed by the 2011-2015 Workgroup. This new report includes highlights of lessons learned from public input and a field test of the original standards, as well as recommendations to Congress and the Secretary of Education.
