Transition to Postsecondary Education

This chapter provides an overview of key legislation impacting college going youth with disability including the IDEA, the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the HEOA. It discusses the importance of preparation for postsecondary education through the transition process, emphasizing the importance of self-determination, person centered planning, and student and family involvement. The authors describe college and career readiness using multi-tiered systems of support and offer two examples of transition assessment tools, the College and Career Readiness for Transition assessment and the Secondary Transition Fidelity Assessment. Finally, the chapter describes postsecondary preparation student students with intellectual disability including access to financial aid, implication for career development and campus access.
