Advocacy & Outreach

Emerging Advocates meeting

This Emerging Advocates group was created for students with disabilities to talk with others so they could share ideas and learn tips together about advocacy. This group has grown to include dozens of emerging leaders who get together on quarterly calls, and we welcome new members. This group is led by and for people with disabilities. Of course, supporters are welcome.

To increase opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities to attend inclusive college programs, it is critical to understand current federal and state legislation and to develop relationships with policymakers. This is not a partisan issue. This is about sharing information, educating legislators and understanding how students, advocates, families, professionals and your neighbors can influence the process.

On September 23, 2021, the Think College Emerging Advocates Group gathered for a meeting with special guest Judy Heumann. Judy is an international disability rights advocate. The group is made up of students with disabilities and others who think advocacy is important. One of the students asked Judy to come speak to them. We had a great meeting and want to thank all of the students who shared their thoughts and asked questions.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students with disabilities face unique challenges as a result of their disability status and potential bias related to their sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression. Educators, counselors, parents/guardians and other adult allies play an important role in ensuring the safety, inclusion and well-being of these students, all of which are essential to academic and social-emotional growth in the classroom and school communities.

Emerging Advocates Group meeting

The Emerging Advocates Group is led by Liz Weintraub and Denise Rozell from the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, or AUCD. They hold this meeting for people with disabilities and their supporters and friends to gather to learn about advocacy and discuss important issues to the disability community. Everyone is welcome!

The theme for March's meeting is advocacy related to transportation.

This 4-page booklet was created by Self Advocates Becoming Empowered for people with intellectual disabilities. It is written in plain language. It includes basic information people need to know about the COVID-19 vaccine.

This booklet can be downloaded from this page and it is also located on the SARTAC (Self Advocacy Resource and Technical Assistance Center) website along with many other helpful resources.
