Preparing for College

"Thinking College: A Conversation Between Ewidji and Lounes" is a short video that introduces students to the early steps of exploring college options.

In the video, two students share how they began looking for college programs and what helped them make decisions along the way. Viewers are introduced to College Search, a tool on the Think College website that serves as a national directory of college programs for students with intellectual disability.

This chapter provides an overview of key legislation impacting college going youth with disability including the IDEA, the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the HEOA. It discusses the importance of preparation for postsecondary education through the transition process, emphasizing the importance of self-determination, person centered planning, and student and family involvement.

In session two of this workshop series hosted by The PACER Center, a panel of experts discuss and share national higher education resources, as well as opportunities that are expanding in Minnesota. Presenters included Dan Habib from Think College, Mary Hauff with the Minnesota Inclusive Higher Education Consortium (MIHEC), Dawn Allen, Director of Bethel Build, and a Bethel Build graduate.

Think It, Dream It, Do It! Post-high School Options for Students with IDD: Continuing Educational Opportunities

In session two of this workshop series hosted by The PACER Center, learn about national higher education resources and opportunities that are continuing to expand in Minnesota. Presented with Dan Habib from Think College, Mary Hauff with the Minnesota Inclusive Higher Education Consortium (MIHEC), Dawn Allen, Director of Bethel Build, and a panel of young adults and their families.

Flexible Supports for College Success Presented by Maria Paiewonsky, Ashley Luce*, and Luke Saint-Amour, this webinar covered topics such as supported education, student engagement in college classes, determining accommodation needs, campus resources, and intensive supports. The presentation emphasized the importance of determining the appropriate level of support for student engagement and satisfaction in college classes. It included information on typical classroom supports, academic accommodations, educational coaching, and peer mentoring.
