Socially Connecting During COVID-19 in College

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person campus involvement for students with intellectual and other developmental disabilities across the nation has been greatly impacted.  Now more than ever, it is important for these college students with disabilities to stay engaged socially and be provided inclusive recreational opportunities.  The Higher EDucation for All pilot postsecondary program has been partnering with the STEP UP to Leadership student organization to promote engagement.  Applications such as Discord and Zoom are used as a means for providing socialization and various recreational

This article describes how programs responded to meet the needs of students with intellectual disability (ID) in response to campus closures and remote learning. The authors relied on individual experiences as well as notes from the Think College program staff meetings, focusing on academics, social inclusion, and employment, as well as the changing roles of peer mentors and families. The article concludes by looking forward to the Fall semester and beyond, examining the longer-term impact of remote instruction and what this could mean for inclusive higher education. 

This webpage was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort to support educators in the move to online teaching and distance learning. Maria Paiewonsky and Lori Cooney produced this resource based on supported education model and universal design for learning (UDL). There are examples for how to support students and numerous technology resources, as well.

This helpful and very timely list was created by Ariana Amaya, OTD, OTR/L at Integrated Studies at Gwynedd Mercy University and Halle King, OTD, OTR/R, at IDEAL at Lipscomb University in response to the drastic changes that happened in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These two higher education professionals share simple yet critical tips for setting up a healthy learning environment at home, emphasizing things like the importance of maintaining a routine, having a designated workspace, and more.
