Think College Insight Brief #15 highlights some recent findings on the impact of postsecondary education on employment outcomes and how this impact differs by disability status, using data from the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS).
The National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) is a 10-year-long study of the characteristics, experiences, and outcomes of a nationally representative sample of youth with disabilities who were 13 to 16 years old and receiving special education services in grade 7 or above, under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the 2000-2001 school year. NLTS2 findings generalize to youth with disabilities nationally and to youth in each of the 12 federal special education disability categories in use for students in the NLTS2 age range.
Students Speak: Stories of Postsecondary Education represent a collection of self-reports by students with intellectual disabilities who are either planning to attend postsecondary education, are currently attending postsecondary education, or have attended postsecondary education. The intent of this booklet is to illustrate successful strategies for inclusion in postsecondary education in the student's voices and to reveal the possible richness of typical life for students with intellectual disabilities given commitment to inclusive education communities.
Participation in postsecondary education is a known predictor of a successful employment outcome for youth without disabilities. There is research documenting that this is true for youth with disabilities as well. Most literature on postsecondary education for youth with disabilities focuses on individuals with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, and physical or sensory disorders. There is limited research that addresses youth with intellectual disabilities regarding successful outcomes of participation in postsecondary education.
This Think College Fast Facts report gives an overview of how postsecondary education experiences can improve employment outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities, based on a secondary analysis of the RSA 911 research data (the Dept. of Vocational Rehabilitation national database) One role of Vocational Rehabilitation is to support postsecondary education in accordance with student's Individualized Plans for Employment (IPE).
